If you look carefully at Mikhyla's bee costume on the
left you will notice that she is wearing a singlet/tank top
with ribbon sewn. However, for the rest of the children the
following pinafore pattern (shown above right) was used with the intention that it would be
easier for children to use in a dress-up box than the tank top. I
used a standard tank top pattern to create her top and this could be used
with the same adaptations for other animals given below. It is just
a matter of preference! |
Materials
- yellow
fabric (cotton) 0.4m x 1m
- wide
black bias binding – approximately 3-4m
- yellow
t-shirt ribbing
- yellow
ribbon
|
 |
Method
-
Cut
fabric 40 cm x 100 cm (40 x 80 for a toddler).
-
Round
off all four corners. Finish
edges.
-
Cut
whole in centre to fit over head. Sew yellow t-shirt ribbing around to finish.
-
Cut
black bias binding into lengths of 45 cm. Make 3-4 stripes for
both front and back. Place horizontally across pinafore, spacing stripes evenly and
sew in place. Tuck edges
under and sew in place.
-
Attach
lengths of ribbon on side for ties.
-
Quilted
wings can also be attached to this pinafore to complete the
costume.

Other Uses for Pinafore
- Tiger - use orange fabric rather than yellow! Make a tail out
of a length of orange fabric and add stripes.
- Spider - Make out of black cotton. Attach black knee high
stockings filled with polyfill - two either side of cape (arms and
legs make the other four legs!). Add a red strip or circle on
back to make a red-back spider.
- Kangaroo - Make out of brown fleecy fabric and add a pocket to the
front. Make a tail out of one leg of pantyhose filled
stiffly with polyfill.
- Monkey - make out of brown and add to front an tan oval for the
stomach area. Make a tail out of pantyhose.
- Lion - Use yellow/tan and make a lighter coloured oval for stomach
as for monkey. Use rope and tassels to create a tail.
